What to Wear for Your Family Beach Session in Bradenton, Sarasota & Surrounding Areas

Planning a family beach photography session in Bradenton, FL, Sarasota, FL, or the surrounding areas is exciting… until you open everyone’s closet and think,

“Okay, but what are we actually going to wear?” 😂

Don’t worry—I’ve got you!

As a Bradenton, FL family photographer, I love creating natural, candid beach portraits that feel relaxed, joyful, and true to your family. Your clothing plays a big part in creating those soft, timeless images, especially when we’re photographing along the beautiful beaches of Bradenton, Sarasota, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, and surrounding Southwest Florida areas.

The goal isn’t for everyone to perfectly match. Instead, choose outfits that coordinate complement one another, and feel like YOU.

🤍 Start With Soft, Neutral Colors

Beach sessions naturally have a soft, dreamy color palette

so neutrals photograph beautifully against the Florida coastline.

Think:

  • Cream
  • White
  • Beige
  • Tan
  • Sand
  • Soft blue
  • Sage
  • Dusty rose
  • Light gray
  • Muted earth tones

These colors work especially beautifully for a Florida beach family photography session because they complement the sand, water, and sky without distracting from the people and connection happening in front of the camera.

🌿 Coordinate Instead of Matching

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same white shirt and khaki shorts!

Instead, choose 2–4 colors that work well together.

For example:

Mom: Flowy cream dress

Dad: Beige linen shirt + light pants

Child: Soft blue dress

Baby: Cream romper

Everyone looks cohesive without looking identical.

This approach works beautifully whether you’re planning family photos in Bradenton, Sarasota, Anna Maria Island, or any outdoor locations

👗 Dresses & Flowy Fabrics Are Your Friend

If you’re wondering what photographs beautifully during a session, I will almost always recommend a long or midi flowy dress for mom.

Movement adds so much to photographs, especially when there’s a little Florida breeze!

Linen, cotton, gauze, and other lightweight fabrics can also create beautiful texture and movement. And yes—barefoot is absolutely encouraged! Your feet are probably going to get sandy anyway. 😉

🧸 Keep the Little Ones Comfortable

This one is especially important!

If your little one is uncomfortable in their outfit, it can make the entire session harder.

Choose clothing that allows them to:

  • Run
  • Play
  • Sit in the sand
  • Pick up shells
  • Splash in the water
  • Get lots of cuddles

Some of my favorite images from sessions in Bradenton and Sarasota happen when children are simply allowed to be kids.

What to Avoid

There are a few things I recommend staying away from:

Neon colors – They can reflect onto skin and become distracting.

Large logos or characters – They can quickly date your photos and pull attention away from your family.

Everyone in the exact same outfit – Coordinating looks usually photograph more naturally.

Super stiff or uncomfortable clothing – You want to be able to move!

Too many competing patterns – One subtle pattern can be beautiful, but several busy patterns together can become overwhelming.

🌊 Don’t Forget About the Florida Weather!

If you’re planning a beach photography session in Bradenton, FL or Sarasota, FL, remember that Florida weather can be warm, breezy, and sandy!

I recommend lightweight, breathable clothing and bringing a change of clothes for little ones if you’re planning to let them play in the water.

And remember: sand is part of the experience!

📸 Most Importantly… Be You

Your family photos don’t need to look like a magazine.

They should look like your family.

If your toddler wants to run, let’s run.

If your kids want to play in the sand, let’s play.

If everyone ends up covered in sand by the end of the session… even better. 🤍

As a lifestyle family photographer serving Bradenton, Sarasota, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, and surrounding Florida communities, my goal isn’t just to

give you pretty pictures.

I want to document the little moments, personalities, connection, and love that make your family yours.

So choose outfits that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourselves—and I’ll take care of the rest.
